Chicken Thoran

Chicken Thoran / Chicken Coconut fry

Back again with another chicken recipe 🍗, who doesn’t love chicken 😍 … popular posts in my blog are all non- vegetarian recipes.  This time it’s a thoran (stir fry with coconut). It is super simple, super easy and above all super scrumptious 👌. Broccoli thoran that I posted long ago was liked by all, same way you will love this thoran too 😍. I love to eat thoran but as the main ingredient is coconut I don’t like to make it here. Coconuts are costly here in US 😞.  But once in a while you can go for it. Chicken thoran is similar to our usual veggie thoran. Boneless chicken 🍗 would be preferred over the usual ones. Boneless chicken tastes better 😋.  It will be a prodigious task with chicken with bones 😓. You will have to separate the flesh from the bones and then use it. It will be a good combo along with moru curry (yogurt gravy) or rasam (tamarind gravy) 👌👌. Give it a try and share your feedback .Okay then let’s get started.

Preparation time: 10 min

Cooking time: 20 min

Serves: 3-4

Ingredients

Boneless chicken: 1 lb/ 450 gm (cut in to small cubes)

Onion: 1 (finely chopped)

Ginger: 1 tsp (chopped)

Garlic: 2-3 cloves (chopped)

Chili powder: 2 -3 tsp

Pepper powder: ½ -1 tsp

Garam masala: 1 tsp

To crush
Coconut: ½ cup

Shallots: 2 (optional)

Fennel seeds: ½ tsp

Curry leaves: 2-3 leaves

To temper
Mustard seeds: 1 tsp

Curry leaves: 1 spring

Red chilies: 2-3

Coconut oil: as needed

METHOD

1.       Crush the ingredients listed under “to crush”. Take care not to grind it fine.

2.       Heat oil in a pan add the ingredients one by one listed under “to temper” starting with coconut oil.

3.       Throw in the chopped onions sauté it well. When it gets well sautéed add ginger and garlic.

4.       When they are well sautéed, simmer the flame and add turmeric powder, chili powder and pepper powder.

5.        Add in the cubed chicken, cover and cook the chicken in medium heat.

6.       When the chicken is half cooked add salt and cook it without covering so that water that has oozed out from the chicken gets evaporated.

7.       When chicken is almost dry check for salt and add crushed coconut mixture.

8.       Allow to cook for another 3-4 min in low- medium heat without covering.

9.       When it is completely dry switch off the flame and transfer to a serving dish.

10.   Tasty chicken thoran is ready, serve hot with rice or roti.

11.   Enjoy.

Notes

1.       You can crush ginger and garlic along with coconut.

2.       Adjust the quantity of chili and pepper powder according to your taste.

3.       You can also use green chilies instead of red chili powder and pepper powder, if so crush it along with coconut.

4.       You can also smear coconut oil at the end.

5.       Try to use coconut oil as far as possible.
